On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule updating "healthy" nutrition facts claims. This is the first time the FDA has updated "healthy" nutrition claims on food labels since the early 1990s, and the rule is designed to help consumers identify foods and beverages that form the basis of a healthy eating pattern and is significant for the tea industry.
According to this final rules, including tea and bottled tea, tea products, as long as every 12 fluid ounces (28.35 grams) 1 oz = tea contains less than 5 k, can indicate the "health" in the packing declaration.This term not only covers regular tea, but also carbonated and non-carbonated teas containing non-caloric ingredients such as flavorings, non-caloric or low-calorie sweeteners, vitamins and minerals.
In the United States, 80% of families have the habit of drinking tea, data show that 160 million people in the United States drink tea every day. In 2024, Americans consumed about 86 billion cups of tea.
