Dahong Mountain is well-known for its Buddhist temples besides amazing natural scenery. There is an old poem appraising Dahong Mountain made by Chenwei zhou, a military leader in Qing Dynasty, said so: No other can be competed with Dahong Buddhist temple in vast land of eastern Hanshui River Basin, Bozhu ranks the tallest peak in northern Hubei Province. According to a book of Dahong Mountain Records, a monk of Shanxing, borned in 764 AD of Tang Dynasty, got his monk degree in Kaiyuan Temple of Hongzhou State. Shanxing, the third generation disiple of Buddhist Master Huineng monk, learned Buddhist scriptures in Wutaishan Temple, he was appionted to carry firewood and water, cook for monks as well. A day Shanxing dreamed of someone, who told Shanxings' meaningful life was somewhere named Dahong Mountain in the south, Shanxing started off the next day, finally arrived at Dahong Mountain in the year of 826 AD after a hard jurney.
It was drought when Shanxing arrived in Dahong Mountain, crops withered in split fields. The owner of Dahong Mountain named Wuling Zhang was going to pray for rain while scarificing of pigs and goats. Shanxing told Zhang to cut his legs himself instead of animal killing, more sincerity to the lord, beacause Buddhism is anti-killing lives. He said there would be rain in three days since his sincerity. Then Shanxing climbed on north Baozhu Peak and prayed. It did rain in next three days, drought was over. When Zhang appreciated him for his pray on Baozhu Peak, Shanxing was still praying there and unaware of Zhang¡¯s arrival. People had adoundant harvest of crops that year, Zhang denoted his wooded mountain to build Buddhist temple in Dahong Mountain for Shanxing. Shanxing died on 29 th, May, 835 AD, he cut his own legs himself before death as promised before the god, however, his legs did not corrupt, the legs were regarded by the temple as priceless treasure and called Buddhist Legs.
Shanxing¡¯s behavior was reported to The Emperor Wuzhong in Tang Dynasty by local gentlemen, Wuzhong Tang was deeply affected and named Shanxing Chi¡¯ren Master. Since then, Dahong temple got famous in China gradually, more and more monks lived there. The temple was named Qifeng Temple by the emperor of Gaozhu Jing in 939, renamed Lingfeng Temple in 1078 by the emperor of Shenzhong Shong, and destroyed in Shong Dynasty because of war, it was not repaired until 1162.
Accroding to Dahong Mountain Records, 26 temples were built in Baozhu Peak, among which some temples ware well known such as Jixiang Temple, Guanying Temple, Quanxing Temple, Shengquan Temple, Qianfuo Temple, Hanglong Temple, Baofeng Temple, Gaofeng Temple. Buddhism lasts hundreds of years in Dahong Mountain, and monks amounted to one thousand at the top time. Dahong Mountain was holly land of Buddhism in Tang Dynasty, eigher for next Dynasties such as Shong Dynasty, Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty.
Dahong Mountain is famous for its culture as well, famous people was usually in relations with famous mountain in China. Chinese poem master of Bai Li said so: Masters were borned in Dahong, There was Zhi Ji after Shennong. Emperor Yan was borned in Lishan Town in south of Dahong Mountain and lived here. Yan was the first tribe head accroding to legend. Zhi Ji was first Chinese philosopher of materialism, there still has Jizhi Temple to mourn Liang Ji in Suzhou City.
It was Shennong that found tea as a harb to cure of disease according to legend, happened in Shennong Period about 2700 years ago, In order to collect herbs to cure disease Shennong had to visit big mountains after a long journey and taste herbs himself, then he found different functions of hundreds kind of herbs. Someday, Shennong felt uncomfortable aftering tasting some poisonous plant, he quickly lied on a big tree and had a rest., a gust of wind came at that time, few leaves falled off the tree on his body, he took a leaf and put in mouth to chaw, Suddenly he felt much better and much spirit. He took some leaves and looked carefully due to curiosity, found it was much different than other tree leaves. Shennong named it Cha in Chinese after studying, Cha is used since then in Chinese.
Tea master Luyu was borned in the south of Dahong Mountain in 733, died in 804. Loving and good at tea all his life, Luyu wrote the world famous book of Chajin, which is regarded as the first book to talk about tea professionally and helpful for tea development in China and the global
